Create your organization

What the onboarding wizard does — creating your organization, making you its Owner, and starting your trial.

Once you sign in with a confirmed email address and are not yet a member of any organization, CodeCharter takes you to onboarding before anything else in the portal. You cannot reach the rest of the portal until you either create your own organization or join an existing one.

Creating or joining

The onboarding page shows both paths at once.

  • If someone invited you, or your verified email domain is set up for auto-join, that offer appears at the top and names the organization. Accepting it makes you a member with the role the invitation or auto-join specifies — nothing else is required from you.
  • Otherwise, or in addition, you can create your own organization. Click Create organization to open the wizard at /onboarding/create.

Accepting an offer does not close off creating your own organization later, and the reverse is also true: one account can belong to more than one organization.

The creation wizard

The wizard asks for exactly two fields:

  • Name: the organization's display name, up to 100 characters.
  • Slug: the URL-safe identifier that becomes part of your organization's web addresses. It must be 3 to 64 characters long, contain only lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens, and cannot start or end with a hyphen. As you type, the portal checks in the background whether the slug is still available and shows "This slug is already taken" if not.

Nothing else is collected here. Description, website, contact email, and the organization's other settings are filled in afterward, on the organization's own settings pages, not during onboarding.

The slug cannot be changed once the organization has published anything, so pick one you are willing to keep.

Click Create organization to submit. If the slug was taken in the meantime, the error appears right on that field and you can try another one; every other field-level problem, for example an empty name, is reported the same way.

What creating an organization does

Submitting the wizard does three things in one step:

  1. It creates the organization with the name and slug you entered.
  2. It makes you the organization's Owner — full control including billing, export, and deletion; see Roles and permissions.
  3. If this is the first organization you have ever created, it starts your trial for that organization.

After creation you land on the organization's dashboard.

Trial and organization creation

The trial belongs to the organization, not to the account. Signing in and confirming your email no longer starts a trial by themselves: the trial starts the moment you create your first organization. See Trial for what the trial includes and how long it runs.

The trial is granted once per account, to the first organization you create yourself. Creating further organizations later, or joining someone else's, does not start another trial for you: an organization you join already has its own subscription or trial, and any additional organization you create starts without one, with a direct path to picking a plan.
